Red as a symbol

Universally regarded as the fundamental symbol of principle of life, with its strength, power and brilliance, red, the color of fire and blood, nevertheless has the same symbolic ambivalence as the latter, no doubt, visually speaking, depending on whether it is light or dark. Light red, dazzling, centrifugal, is diurnal, masculine, tonic, inciting to action, throwing its radiance on everything like the sun with an immense and irreducible power. The dark red, on the contrary, is nocturnal, female, secret and, at the limit, centripetal; it represents not the expression, but the mystery of life. One drives, encourages, provokes, it is the red of flags, signs, posters and advertising packaging; the other alerts, retains, encourages vigilance and, at the limit, worries: it is the red of road traffic lights, the red lamp prohibiting the entry of a film or radio studio, a operating room, etc. It is also the old red lamp of brothels, which could seem contradictory, since instead of prohibiting, they invite, but it is not, when one considers that this invitation concerns the transgression of the deepest prohibition of the time concerned, the prohibition thrown on the sexual drives, the libido, the passionate instincts.

Blue as a symbol

Blue is the most deep colors: the gaze sinks into them without encountering any obstacle and is lost in them ad infinitum, as before a perpetual evasion of color. Blue is the most intangible colors: nature generally presents it only as a result of transparency, that is to say of accumulated emptiness, emptiness of air, emptiness of water, emptiness of crystal or diamond. The void is exact, pure and cold. Blue is the most Cold colors, and in its highest absolute value pure, excluding the total void of neutral white. On these fundamental qualities depends all of its symbolic applications.
