Final Fantasy XVI takes place in the world of Valisthéa, whose specificity is to contain six crystals, called Mother Crystals, producing ether and allowing people living nearby to use magic. Around each crystal is built a nation: the Archduchy of Rosalia, the Holy Empire of Bloodbrec, the Kingdom of Valoed, the Republic of Dalmequia, the Kingdom of Iron and the Dominion of Crystal.
In addition to a crystal, each nation except the Crystal Dominion has an Emissary, that is, a person in whom an entity called the Primordial resides and who is able to call upon its power.
